| The Section 8 Rental Assistance Program provides a Voucher to low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled that assists with rental payment for Safe, Decent and Sanitary housing through the private sector. Private landlords who have a contract with HHA own all Section 8 units. Since the rental assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find and rent privately owned housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, mobile homes and apartments. After receipt of a voucher the participant is responsible for locating suitable housing with a private landlord and is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program. When a lease has been executed an inspection of the unit will be performed and annually thereafter. To assist participants in locating suitable housing, the Housing Authority provides updated lists of landlords and units that may be available.
Voucher Program: A rental subsidy is paid directly to the landlord on behalf of the participating family. The family pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.
